My first college book got here a couple of days ago and I've been glancing through it. It's about the English language and I never realized how much I don't know about the English language until now. I'm really looking forward to this class. Tia thinks I'm crazy but she's going to be studying child abuse this semester so really, which one of us is crazy?
Skimming the book, I realize that most of how I write has been picked up from what I read. I don't know all the different tools that I'm using and don't bother asking me about names of those tools. I just read and write.
I'll probably dive into this book in earnest next week. I'd like to see how much of it I can have read before I have to start the semester for reals and before I have to dive into Shakespeare, where the reading is bound to be a little bit slower as I try to figure out what the hell he's saying and then go deeper into why he's saying it and why he's saying it in that way.
I'm sure that a lot of the book will just be putting names to things that I already know and will be easy enough to attach in my head. At least, that's my hope. I'm sure that I have been exposed to most everything so it's just a matter of bringing recognition to the different parts of the language.
As I did last semester, if there are interesting questions, I'll be posting them here or on Facebook for discussion. I really enjoyed that last semester as we (you readers and I) discussed works in American Literature and concepts of teaching in Secondary Education. This semester is all English, the actual language and William Shakespeare. I think it will still give us topics for some good discussions.
