Trey has loved Top Gun ever since we put in that surround sound system that I won last Christmas. I know he's not the only 3-year old that goes around saying:
"Talk to me Goose."
"I'm looking! I'm looking!"
but I think he still might enjoy the movie more than most kids his age. He wants to hear the soundtrack when we drive (umm, yes we have it, doesn't everyone?) and loves planes of all types.
In the last week and half, he's had a couple of special treats.
The first one, he wasn't able to actually attend because it was restricted to people 21 years old or older. That seems a bit discriminatory but Trey's dad did the next best thing.
Kenny Loggins came in concert and I did security for the event. I had warned my wife earlier to expect a call so when Kenny started singing Danger Zone, I speed-dialed home and my wife put it on speaker. Trey's too young to know that he was actually listening to Kenny but I thought it was pretty cool. I asked my wife about it when I got home and she said that it was late and he was tired and he didn't seem too impressed.
The next morning, Trey came running in my room, jumped on the bed, and crawled up to me.
"I heard Top Gun on the phone," he said, with absolute delight.
Yesterday, he went to his first day of preschool. He's going to be going to daycare for a couple of hours a couple of days a week so that I can move my schedule around. After I picked him up, we started for home, taking the back road because there is a lot of construction on the main road. We drive down to the historical airport after leaving the preschool and there is a helicopter coming in for a landing so we take a little detour and go to the airport parking lot.
We got out and watched the helicopter for a while. It was already down but we watched anyway. The airport puts the radio traffic over speakers and I heard a plane calling in its approach from 10 miles out so we hung out for a bit and watched. We watched two planes land and watched as they fueled up the helicopter.
Trey loved it and it was the first thing that he told his mom when she got home from work.
We're going to try and get to the Thunderbirds this year. They should be coming to Utah this summer. They are usually out here every other year. I think that he'll love that. Maybe we'll have to check on the Blue Angels as well. I think they visit Boise every once in a while.
My wife isn't too pleased with Trey's other Top Gun quote.
"Holy shit!"
I dunno, it could come in handy.
