I had a new student in my exercise class today. He has been thinking about it for a while but is concerned that he's not going to get much of a strength building workout in my class. He was going to a gym and lifting weights and wonders how he's going to get a workout without lifting the big weights. Fair enough. My class is not going to make you huge. I'm stronger than I've ever been and I have put on a little bit of muscle size but not much.
So, we're in class and I remember rule #1 of my exercise class and I tell him the rule:
Don't puke on my mats.
Simple rule. I live on the edge of the desert. There is plenty of space where puking is permissible. You can't even see a house of building to the south of me. The next building is about 120 miles away. Puke your guts out but not on my mats. They have a bit of a grid on them and hard to clean.
"Don't worry about me," he said. Cool. I'm good. We're working Back, Shoulders, and Triceps. It's a good workout but I really worry about the puking when we work legs. All the blood leaves the stomach and goes into the big muscles of the legs. Once the blood completely vacates the area around the stomach, the stomach sends out a signal that it's closed to business and everything must leave until the blood returns.
He made it all the way through the workout and are into the warm-down stretches when he says, "I think I'm going to puke."
He runs out the door to toss his morning cookies before coming back.
Okay, I had lots of stuff going on today and this post is going out about 6 hours late so let's get to today's exercise. Hand Touch Push-Ups. Not any harder really than regular push-ups but using some extra muscles in the chest area, triceps, and abs. It's a chance to break any monotony if you've been doing lots of regular push-ups and clears a path for an exercise that I will showcase next week.
Since I'm so late with this post, I'm not going to go into any explanations. I'll just say the usual: give these a try and tell me what you think.
