God Punished Sinners Today

Redlight Donna's Ranch is a brothel in Wells Nevada, about 40 miles to the west of here.  Someone was asking me what it looked like the other day.  I didn't know the answer.  I still don't know the answer.  I checked the website to see if they had any pictures for my post but their site didn't have any pictures of the brothel.  There were a couple of pictures of independent contractors but the question wasn't about what the women looked like.

Anyway, Wells is a small place and has probably been able to fly under god's radar with King George acting as a distraction.  It's probably hard for god to tear his eyes away from the action when W is killing hundreds of thousands of people in god's name.

God probably took a quick look around on his way back from the fridge with a beer and caught Donna's out of the corner of his eye.  He unleashed a quick bolt of power before settling back down on the couch to watch more man made death and destruction.

I was sitting here reading email when god released a bit of pent up energy on Wells.  My computer desk started to shimmy, then shake, then sway.  The house followed suit and I headed for the hallway in case things started falling off walls, I could start the rescue operation on my family.

A 6.3 earthquake centered very close to Wells caused propane tanks to explode in Wells and skyscrapers in Salt Lake City to sway.  I haven't gone out and looked to the west to see if I can sees smoke in case I would be turned into a pillar of salt.

Experts say that Utah is an earthquake time bomb and that it's just a matter of time before a hellacious quake wreaks havoc there.  That's probably why they are trying so hard to keep gambling and prostitution out of the state.

I haven't heard if Donna's was damaged.  God is known for his shotgun approach to punishment though so there is probably lots of collateral damage.  Good god-fearing people who take no part in the selling of flesh probably had structural damage done to their properties.

There have been some smaller after shocks since then, one while I was typing this post (3 hours after the initial quake).

I think we must be in the end of days although if there was a guy being serviced by Donna's at a quarter after six this morning, he probably thinks she's got quite the gift.

If you build it, will they come?

Wendoverwill At the beginning of the year 2006, the company that I work for announced that they were going to start building a new casino.  It sounded like it was going to be very nice but the big question on everyone's mind was how they were going to staff it.

West Wendover is very isolated and there aren't any support services out here.  There are five casinos, a grocery store, some fast food places, and now there's a dollar store.  The closest city (and Emergency Room) is Salt Lake City which is 120 miles away.  That's where people do their shopping.  My wife and I have become online shoppers because shipping and handling is cheaper than gas, not to mention the great deal of time that is wasted driving back and forth across the desert.

3 out of 5 casinos here are owned by the same company.  I heard they tried to buy one of the others but were blocked by monopoly laws.  The two casinos they don't own are not very good (that's an understatement but I'm trying to be nice).  My brother stayed at one of them once because they gave him a free room for the night.  He said they charged him too much.

The problem is that the casinos don't pay enough in wages to entice people from Salt Lake City (or anywhere else in the US) to move out here.  They rely on immigrants from Mexico (many of them legal) to staff the casinos.  Turnover rate in non-tipping jobs is extremely high.  None of those departments are ever fully staffed or at least not for more than a week or two.  My main function as a manager is hiring people.  Including me, I have 19 people in my department.  In the last 5 weeks, I've had 7 people quit.  I've hired 7 people to replace them.  I call my department, "The Revolving Door."

I wasn't a manager when the announcement was made but I was friends with many of them and that's all they talked about.  No one was excited about a new casino being built even though the last casino built out here was in 1986.  The plans sounded like it was going to be beautiful but no one cared because it would mean taking a staff that didn't meet the requirements of 3 casinos and splitting the employees among 4 casinos.

The announcement came and went and nothing happened.  Until this year.  Enter Silver Leaf.
